CHEMICAL ENGINEERING

Vision

Our aim is to be a prestigious training, education and research institution which provide a nationally and internationally qualified education by expanding and improving its academic staff capacity in fields of education, research and technology development.

Mission

Our mission is to train Chemical Engineers who can professionally analyze the problems that they face with and design the chemical processes, who are qualified with professional knowledge and skill, who can incessantly improve himself, who are creative, enterprising and collaborative, who can contribute to the enhancement of living standards, who aims perpetual progress, who can solve the problems in his field, who are sensitive to the environment and aware of his moral responsibility and who are beneficial to the industry, state, and society by providing our students the knowledge and working skills that are needed for Chemical Engineering as a profession.

DEPARTMENT OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERING

GENERAL INFORMATION

The Department of Chemical Engineering was opened in 2008 and the department offers courses with laboratory training leading to the degrees of Bachelor of Science, Master of Science. The courses are designed with consideration of the modern concepts of chemical engineering education and new requirements of industry.

Today a chemical engineer is expected to perform research, development and desingn work in addition to assuming production responsibilities. He must be capable of evaulating new projects, competative bids and in carrying out economic analyses at an advanced level. He is expected to be qualified in the supervision of the operation of the plants. His responsibilities range from the evaluation of raw materials to the competative marketing of finished products. The program is designed to give students not only the fundamental of modern chemical engineering, but also instruction in a variety of subjects, both technical and non technical, so as to develop a broader view leading to a more intelligent approach to industrial and organizational problems. Along with the academic training, the students are required to participate in Summer Training Programs. Through out their studies, they are encouraged to take part in applied and theoritical research.

Department  of Chemistry Engineering  was founded according to the law item 35180 in 28th November in 2008 and students have enrolled to the department since 2009-2010 education period. Consisting of Basic Process and Thermodynamics Department , Chemical Technologies Department and,Operation and Reactor Designing Department; Chemistry Engineering Department has an Associate Professor, three Assistant Professors and Research Associates.

GRADUATE PROGRAM

The graduate program has started to accept students since 2009-2010 academic year.

Research activities: Although the department has recently been founded, there are several research topics currently under study. They broadly may be categorized as follows: studies related to coal science and technology, polymer technology, mineral processing, process design, catalysis and reaction engineering.

LABORATORIES

The Department has the following research facilities and laboratories:

1) The General Chemistry Laboratory is equipped to acquaint the freshman with the basic experimental procedures and laboratory techniques used in the study of properties and analysis of common elements and their compounds.

2) Analytical Chemistry Laboratory has the facilities required for qualitative and quantitative analysis of inorganic substances, including volumetric, gravimetric, colorimetric and spectrophotometric determinations.

3) The Physical Chemistry Laboratory has facilities for experimentation in the following areas: Calibration in volumetry, solution and solubilities, molecular weight determination, thermodynamical conductiometric and potentiometer measurements, velocity of chemical reactions, surface chemistry and colloid chemistry.

4) Chemical Engineering Laboratory. Experiments in fluid flow, heat transfer, drying, distilation, adsorption, extraction, crystallization, filtration, crushing, size separation and flotation. Laboratory provides practical training and experience in application of principles in momentum, heat and mass transfer.

5) Industrial Chemistry Laboratory. Standard tests related to the essential industrial process and study of reaction in organic and inorganic chemical technology.
