The acreage of the province of Tunceli, which is in the Upper Euphrates Basin in the Eastern Anatolia, is 7774 km2 and the altitude is 914 meters. The province has a rising topography from West to East and from South to North and 70% of mountains, 25% of plateaus, 5% of plains and flats create of the territory of the province. The Munzur Mountains, whose average altitude is 3000 meters, are located in the northern of the province. The Munzur Mountains and its southern regions are very rich in terms of the streams to get rainfall much above the average of the region. The Munzur, the Mercan, the Pülümür, the Tahar, and the Peri are the major rivers and all of them flow into Keban Dam Lake. The Uzunçayır Dam was built in the downstream of the area which confluents of the Pülümür and the Munzur River for electricity generation and water accumulation began in September 2009. The dam lake area ranges from the city center. Also, it has planned to be built a large number of dams for the purpose of electricity production on the Munzur, the Pülümür, and the Peri Rivers. The Munzur River, which also passes through the city center, and Uzunçayır Dam Lake, which is influented by the Munzur River, are face to face the pollution. In the region, there is no industrialization, but the domestic solid wastes of the province are discharged directly into this river. In addition, the domestic solid wastes are stored in an area close to the city center as irregular. There are four hot springs within provincial boundaries.
